Dasara or Navarathri (Nine Nights) is a religious festival which is practiced all over in India in gaiety and pomp. In Southern India, Navarathri is dedicated to Durga, the Mother Goddess for her triumph over evil Mahishasura, (Mahisha is an Evil Demon who takes the shape of a Wild Buffalo) while it is celebrated as the Triumph of Rama over Ravana, the other Epic of Hinduism, Ramayana.

Navarathri is adopted as the State Festival by the princely state of Mysore for centuries. The rulers of Mysore used Navarathri as means of culturally uniting the subjects around the most popular Hindu festival, which majority of the state celebrated.

The festival is celebrated by rich and poor and in Mysore, the primary celebration happens at one of the World's most beautiful palaces.

This year (2019) the Dasara starts on 29th September and concludes on 8th October.
